Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum)
Native to Europe, the blackcurrant and it's relatives red and white currants have been spread around the globe as a cultivated crop and introduced exotic.
Black currants are an uncommon crop in the United States due to being blamed for a historic spread of fungus attacking white pine plantations. This meant the sweet and flavoursome berries never gained a foothold in national cuisine.
The name currant comes from the Anglo-Norman French for grapes of corinth "raisins de courantz".
